That could be done so know one else uses it or are future planning they may not be near doing at the time.

Very true. The "Eye of the North" name is more likely as it's both a registered URL and a trademarked term.
For Guild Wars 2, the term is now trademarked; but the URLs have been held for a while externally to NCsoft, and currently point to a page on guildwarsonline, which - oddly - appears to be an advertisement to buy gold (although I can't follow the links from here to confirm). So, the trademarks could just be a first step in protecting the name and not necesarilly related to future plans.

Someone said the term "Guild Wars 2" was trademarked. This does NOT necessarily mean they are working on it; there was a specific event that caused game developers to be wary about trademarking things they might even THINK about doing.
This was Half-Life 2. The term "Half-Life 2" was trademarked by someone before the game company could, and thus the actual game had to have a superscript "2," creating the *properly* read name of "Half-Life Squared."
Thus, a lot of companies will trademark names of projects they may or may not work on for a VERY long time, but they want to ensure they have a name for. So perhaps when Anet was originally developing Guild Wars, they thought, "Hey we might wanna make a sequel, better reserve the name Guild Wars 2 just in case."
One of several possible situations.

The "''Guild Wars 2''" name wasn't trademarked until March 2007. But, as I mentioned way up above, I agree that the fact that the name is trademarked does not automatically mean that there is a GW2 in the works. There are multiple possible reasons for such a move.

Yup, noted that here: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...&postcount=882
What's really odd is that guildwars2.com and guildwars2.org were both registered July 2004. The trademarking of the name could be as a direct response to the domain squatter, the first step in legal action on it for all we know.
The Eye of the North rumor is more convincing as ArenaNet/ NCSoft own both the URL and the trademark ... but the Guild Wars 2 rumors could be real, could be related to battle a cybersquatter, could be just a decision to trademark the name due to its recent publicity to prevent its use as a name for a rumors site, or could be some other as-yet unknown reason to trademark it.

Makes me wonder if Guild Wars 3 is not already been established as an official trade mark.

No, it hasn't - at least, not in the United States (not sure what agencies handle it elsewhere in the world). Anyone can do a search of the USPTO website for Trademarks. Currently, the only trademarks with "Guild Wars" in the name are: "Guild Wars", "Guild Wars Factions", "Guild Wars Nightfall", "Guild Wars: Eye of the North", and "Guild Wars 2".
Two oddities in that list: "GW:EotN" is the only one with a colon in the name. Also, the name "Guild Wars Prophecies" is not explicitly trademarked.

So I am guessing that whole Guild Wars: Utopia was a fluke then.

Yep, that had been debunked already.
Heh I stumbled on the Eye of the North and Guild Wars 2 registration today as well. And even though Guild Wars 2 is registered, that still says nothing for the status (as people have noted) nor about if there is one (which is the more likely scenario) what it would contain.
Whoo the reports of the PC Gamer contents should start rolling in in a couple of days!

they stated that GW:Utopia was some sort of project that they were working on but then decided against it, or something like that.

An interesting bit I noticed when I looked at the trademark pages for Guild Wars: Eye of the North and Guild Wars 2, is that trademarks were both filed on March 6th...one day after this was posted. Hmm, I wonder.... :P

I noticed that as well. NCSoft might have gotten scared that some other company or individual would register the name and make a game with that name, which cannot be stopped at first.
